As snow fell silently in a secret location in eastern Ukraine, the Russian infantrymen huddled on a garage floor, their hands dirty and their faces exhausted. The men had been captured by Ukrainian troops during intense fighting for the city of Avdiivka. Now they waited to be sent to prisoner-of-war facilities, far from the front line.

When Ukrainian armored vehicles breached the main Russian defensive line in southeastern Ukraine last month, it raised hopes for a decisive breakthrough. It hasn’t happened. Instead, nearly five months into the counteroffensive, Ukrainian infantry are still toiling forward in small groups along tree lines packed with Russian trench systems and mines while under fire from artillery and explosive aerial drones.

Russia Attacks Ukraine’s Future by Forcibly Removing Its Children Thousands of orphans and young people separated from their parents have been taken to Russian territory and placed in foster homes and institutions. Some families are able to make the difficult journey to bring them back. Empty cribs at the Kherson Regional Children’s Home, where Russians removed children in October.

NIZHYN, Ukraine—The Ukrainian platoon was digging in desperately along a tree line in this country’s east when grenades began exploding around it and Russian soldiers crept in from the left. The 16 Ukrainians fought back as best they could but couldn’t stop the Russians from overrunning a position held by five of their number, including Pvt. Oleksandr Matsievskiy, a 42-year-old electrician who lived with his mother and was new to front-line combat.
KOSTYANTYNIVKA, Ukraine—Every time Pvt. Viktor Daletskiy drives into the besieged eastern city of Bakhmut to pick up the injured and dead, the front line is a bit closer and the route in more precarious. “It’s really tough. They’re getting closer and closer,” he said of the Russians during a pit stop this week outside a gas station 14 miles west of Bakhmut. “But their losses are still greater than ours.”
DNIPRO, Ukraine—Tetyana Dychko tried not to worry when her husband, freshly conscripted into the Ukrainian army, stopped responding to messages. Yuriy Synerub, a 38-year-old electrician, had warned he might lose the cellphone signal on the front lines, where he was dispatched late last year.
BAKHMUT, Ukraine—Minutes after an explosion rang out near the bus station in this war-torn eastern city, a team of medics arrived to find a mangled car and an elderly lady lying wounded at the roadside. Seconds later, a missile slammed into the volunteers’ white van, unleashing a fireball that blew the medics off their feet.
CHASIV YAR, Ukraine—Ukrainian soldiers have dug trenches and reinforced them with logs in the snow-covered hills here as part of a freshly strengthened defensive line west of the country’s deadliest battlefield. About 5 miles away, Russian forces are pressing ahead with a grinding advance on the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut in a monthslong battle that has chewed up hundreds of soldiers.
DNIPRO, Ukraine—In a family video, a young girl blew out four candles on a birthday cake, her father standing close by in the warm glow of a yellow kitchen. Now, the father is dead and half the kitchen is gone. A bowl of fruit still sits on the kitchen table amid the wreckage—a remnant of the Korenovskiy family’s life before a Russian cruise missile tore through their riverside home in this eastern city.
